The gym is designed for people to train hard and make positive changes in their physique. That being said, there are always people that interfere with gym etiquette and annoy gym goers that are actually serious. The following is a list of the most annoying individuals in the gym. If you find yourself in any of the following categories, you might want to reconsider your actions and realize the effect it has on those trying to get through an intense, serious workout.
The Socializer
Problem: The Socializer is the guy or girl who only goes to the gym to talk to their friends or hit on the opposite sex. They usually talk right in front of a piece of equipment you want to use. They are clueless to their surrounding and disrupt the flow of your workout. You have to either wait for them to walk away, take out your earbuds to ask them to move, or find another piece of equipment.
Solution: The Socializer needs to hang out at the juice bar or go to a night club. The gym floor is for business only. We’re not saying that they should never speak, just be considerate of others working out.
The locker room phone talker
Problem: The locker room phone talker is loud and seems to want everyone to know their business.
Solution: Nobody cares about your family issue or your wheeling and dealing. Save the phone call for your walk to your car.
Mr. Naked
Problem: Mr. Naked is the individual who just walks around the locker room in their birthday suit. Mr. Naked likes to strike up a conversation or stand close to you while you’re trying to get dressed.
Solution: Nobody wants to see your junk. Either wrap a towel around you or put your damn clothes on!
Mr. Smelly
Problem: Mr. Smelly has no idea how bad they smell. When you’re breathing heavy and working hard, the last thing you want to do is inhale a huge breath of stink.
Solution: Mr. Smelly needs to shower regularly and always use deodorant. Most gyms have showers in the locker room. Take advantage of them before and after training. Also, they need to wash their gym clothes regularly and not wear the same attire consecutive days.
The machine hog
Problem: This individual is even worse than the Socializer. They typically read a magazine, newspaper or text while they sit on a machine. When you ask them if you can get in a set, they tell you “ I only have one more set” and continue sitting there reading or texting.
Solution: The machine hog needs be aware and considerate of other people’s time. People are waiting to use the equipment and free weights in the gym. Serious bodybuilders and fitness individuals are performing certain routines that get interrupted by this person.
The machine stealer
Problem: The machine sealer’s action is twofold. This guy either jumps on the machine you were using right as you walk over to get a drink, or they ask “Bro, you mind if I jump in?” and start performing drop sets or high volume reps while you stand there waiting.
Solution: Most gyms have duplicate machines. Find one that isn’t being used, change the order of your exercises, or just perform one normal straight set. Other techniques have their place, but not at the expense of someone else.
Mr. too close to the dumbbell rack
Problem: Mr. too close to the dumbbell rack is the individual that grabs a pair of dumbbells and performs side laterals or bicep curls 6 inches from the rack.
